| Lead seal from a wine bottle. Although it is heavily oxidized, analysts R. King Harris and Inus Harris were able to discern a raised impression of the sun and the words ORVIETANO VERO. DI-ROMA and a fleur-de-lis symbol (see drawing, above right). The wine was made in the town of Orvieto, Italy, and had been shipped through the port of Rome. Italian law required all wine exported from Italy to have the port name on seals, which were placed over the top of the bottle. TARL Collections.
