This notice about a Juneteenth celebration appeared in a "Local News" column in the May 21, 1892 edition of The Sunday School Herald. Juneteenth is the holiday commemorating the emancipation of the enslaved African Americans in Texas on June 19, 1865. It immediately became an important holiday for all freedmen in Texas, and the tradition spread to other states as well.
