Ransom William's Enfield rifle, shown above the mantle in the painting, is based on the distinctive butt plate found during excavations at the farm. On the right side of the image is a similar plate shown on an actual Enfield rifle. Although guns of this type were used in the Civil War, the history of William's gun is unknown. |
