The second most common type of buttons were made of shell (a). Like the prosser buttons, shell buttons came in many different sizes and forms, from two hole to four hole. Also pictured are a variety of black buttons of different materials. One broken black glass button (b) is shown. It is highly decorative, but missing its outer edge. Two examples of black jet buttons (c, d) are also pictured. Two specimens (c) resemble the jet buttons advertised in the 1895 Montgomery Ward & Company catalog. The last specimen is a decorative hard rubber button (e), but no manufacturer marks are present.
