Any edged tools required constant sharpening on the farmstead. The drawknives, axes, hoes, and other tools would wear down after constant use and need their cutting edges honed. In order to achieve this, the Williams purchased a large grindstone fixture. The tool consisted of a hand crank (b), roller wheel bracket (c), and roller wheel assembly cover (d), all attached to an axle driven by the hand crank. At the center of the axle was a large stone wheel that would spin when the crank handle was turned. The blade was sharpened by placing its edge at a low angle firmly against the rotating stone wheel. No pieces of the stone grinding wheel were found, but much of the wheel mechanism is represented. |
