This scene depicts a burial at Seminole Sinkhole, a natural cave formed by a solution cavity in the limestone bedrock. Such places probably had great symbolic importance as openings to the underworld. The deceased was lowered into the narrow sinkhole opening perhaps with the idea that in doing so, he or she could join ancestors in the world beyond the living face of the earth.
